Emily Hendersen and I Can Sew Ruffles

Big disclosure here - no cable TV in my house.

So I am begging a friend to tape HGTV's Secrets from a Stylist this weekend for me.

It is must-see-TV. I've been enamored of Emily Hendersen's talent ever since I caught the premiere of her show holed up in a motel during a road trip to Florida. Traveling + motel cable = HGTV for me!

{source: HGTV}
In that first episode, Emily transformed Glee co-creator Ian Brennan's home with a mixture of three styles: historic traditional, '60s mod and global traveler. And she did it layer by layer, reworking it up as she went. Did I mention she also shops the flea markets? Heaven.

Now her second show is coming this weekend: Saturday night, February 26 9PM est. Watch this show, everyone! Then contact HGTV and ask for a bizillon more episodes. Enough real estate shows, more design shows!

{aww, cute!}
Emily has been posting on her amazing blog Style by Emily Hendersen a few of the roots that rock her talent, that is her 4-H projects she did as a kid.

So last visit to my parent's house, I dug into the old photos. You know I sewed my wedding dress, but did you know I sewed as a kid, too? Here's a calico-filled girl scout quilt.

And here's the dress I sewed for my sister S that she wore her first day of school. I was nine years old.

Emily, if you are reading I want to tell you her dress was pink and white stripe seersucker, with a yoke front and ruffled sleeves. Any ruffles planned on your show this Saturday? I'll be watching!

  1. I've heard of Emily Henderson but can't say I've ever watched her show. I have satellite but I'm not big on TV. But I could always use some tips on styling so might have to check it out Saturday night. Cute picture of you as a kid and love your new header!

  4. I found the description of the show: Design Star winner Emily Henderson styles out a living room in the new home of newlyweds Bobby and Hillary who live in the Hollywood Hills. Having gained a thorough understanding of their diverse interests and tastes, Emily redesigns their living room in two layers, each with a style all its own. Emily's first look has a glamorous luxurious flare that she calls Hollywood Regency. The final look combining both looks is called Hollywood Country Club.

  5. Cute pic of you as a little girl..great quilt and wow at 9 you sewed a dress for your sister, that's amazing. At 9 all I was doing was running around in the woods, climbing trees and fishing for cat fish. xx Danielle

  6. How sweet that you were sewing at such an early age and that you made a dress for your little sister. I began to crochet around that age, and hand sewed little items, but didn't begin sewing until I was a teen.
    Congratulations, you won my NOVICA giveaway!

  8. Love the picture of your sister in her dress with a ruffle at Bell Top School (love the name of the school tooo!) - really gorgeous. Incredibly clever - did you hand sew or do some with a machine. Wow! I remember we had home economics and I had to get my mother to finish my apron...should have paid more attention...

  9. Jody- I sewed the dress by machine, a White Sewing Machine that was built into it's little flip table with a knee lever to control the speed. I sewed my wedding dress on the same sewing machine.

  12. Loretta,
    I swear, you're always full of lovely surprises! You're sister is sooo lucky; if I had been in her shoes I would have kept you very busy begging you to make a different dress every week. I hope she was a nicer kid than me!
